Nature's Best Africa was not born from a market trend. It began with a phone call between two friends during one of the most difficult seasons of my life.
At the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, I lost my job while raising my daughter and expecting another child. As my savings disappeared, access to balanced meals became increasingly difficult and my health began to deteriorate.
One day, I called a friend and told her I was hungry, but I was tired of asking for money simply to survive another day. Instead, I asked her to send me a small amount of money so I could buy indigenous vegetables that I could prepare, preserve and eat over several meals.
She sent the money. I bought managu, sagaa, terere, kunde and mrenda. I prepared them in my small kitchen and stored them in my refrigerator. Over time, I began to feel better.
But that experience left us asking a much bigger question: why were nutritious African foods still difficult for many households to access affordably and conveniently, while the farmers who grew them continued to struggle with unreliable markets?
That question became the beginning of Nature's Best Africa.
There was a clear disconnect between what farmers were producing and what families could conveniently access and consume. I prepared the first stock in my kitchen and shared it through a simple social media post. People bought it. Demand grew.
My friend soon joined me in sourcing, preparation, marketing, sales and distribution. She later became my equal business partner.
We made mistakes. We paused the business. At one point, we nearly walked away completely. But in July 2021, we restarted with a KSh 50,000 loan, stronger systems and a clearer purpose. We committed ourselves to building a business centred on nutrition, traceability, food preservation, farmer market access and consumer convenience.
Today, Nature's Best Africa is a nutrition-led food company operating at the intersection of agriculture, nutrition, food processing, wellness and consumer convenience. We are building a stronger connection between the people who grow nutritious food and the people who need to eat it.
Our work includes indigenous vegetables, pulses and legumes, cold-pressed juices, wellness products, personalised nutrition services, nutrition education and food-system partnerships.
To make nutritious African foods more accessible, convenient and desirable while creating stronger market opportunities for smallholder farmers and supporting healthier communities.
A future where nutritious African foods are valued, accessible and enjoyed across generations, and where farmers are meaningfully connected to sustainable markets.
What began as one friend helping another access her next nutritious meal revealed a much wider food-system challenge. Our personal experience exposed the problem. Our first customers demonstrated the demand. Our farmers showed us the opportunity.
Our journey has strengthened our belief that African food systems can work better for both farmers and families.
Nourishing people. Strengthening farmers. Reconnecting Africa with its food.
